In 1902 confectionary business Tonnema was founded. They made peppermints in different flavors for different types of customers. This also meant that the quality varied a great deal. In 1922 they registered their own brand: KING, the king of peppermints.
KING stands for Kwaliteit In Niets Geëvenaard (Quality that Can’t be Matched). From 1927 onward the peppermints could only be bought in rolls. KING peppermint was the sweet that was consumed during Protestant services. People could eat it without making a sound since it didn’t have a paper wrapper and because it was packed in a roll you could easily take it with you.
